The News Media

Needle in a Haystack

There’s so much information around us now that, unlike before where we had to extract information, we have to sort out relevant data from all the noise. Therefore the power of media is now not only “determining” what is important, but what is not.

On Tuesday, President Obama signed a bill that protects companies that hold the patents of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and genetically engineered (GE) foods. The bill protects companies like Monsanto, a large multinational company that owns the patents to the most productive and widely used soybeans, from future litigation based on negative health and side effects of their crops. The provision was placed into the bill last minute, without review from either the agriculture or judicial committees of Congress.

With the media focused on equal marriage rights and gun control, this bill was basically passed “under the radar” (at least public radar), with no sound from the common “news outlets.”

  1. I wonder about this myself, because the only reason people finally started paying attention to it was because of a very visible Facebook campaign. However, people on Facebook campaign every day for lots of different little pet causes; what was it about this campaign that captured so many people’s attention?
